>> reporter: she tells me the message was discovered earlier. i asked if they waited to release it and she didn't say. we're going to show you where on campus this emergency was discovered. it was discovered at college 10 on the north side of campus and written inside a men's bathroom on the campus of college 10, has since been scrubbed from the wall. according to the uc santa cruz officials, they did say it had nothing to do with any racial an mi must. they also told me, uc santa cruz chancellor -- galloway told me what they were trying to do is find the person quietly before releasing the information to the publicly.

that's why they didn't release it until january 11th. they also said winter break is coming up and if they released the information then, it wouldn't have reached a lot of people. when i talked to her on the phone, they said they had prom messing information on who might have done this. >> if we had been able to identify the individual prior to the campus alert, we would not have needed to. >> reporter: they said since they released the information to the campus, the students on campus and staff on campus, they had a couple people come forward to talk about possible further leads in the case. campus officials notified the fbi, but the fbi is not now investigating. it's not clear if they ever were. it appears as though the local

police will be handling the investigation. i asked the vice chancellor if they will alter their schedule on january 18, the emergency about something threatening happening on january 18th. she said classes will go on. i'll talk to students to see if i can get reaction to what was written early december. we're getting new details about the accused gunman in the tucson shooting. it's coming from his former girlfriend. >> i think he expected to get shot. if you look at his facebook and youtube, everything is written in past tense. that's not common. >> that was the voice of ashley figueroa who dated loughner.

gabrielle giffords' husband. they honored the people who responded to the scene and called for a more civil discourse. >> it's important for us to pause for a moment and make sure we're talking with each other in a way that heals, not in a way that wounds. >> reporter: the call for healing and unit continued at the capitol where a letter is circulating from a democratic congressman calling for democrats and republicans to sit together at the upcoming state of the union address instead of on opposite sides. there's been a lot of analysis about whether inflammatory statements from conservatives like sarah palin played a role in the shooting. a new poll shows americans are rejecting that idea. 53% said it's intended to make

concord police are looking for two men who stabbed a woman during a robbery attempt. police released these two sketches. the man on the left is described as white in his 30s, six feet tall with brown hair, brown eyes and missing several upper teeth. the second attacker is described as a a on that know man, 5'7" with a heavy bu.d the woman was sitting on the park in baldwin park when he is was approached by the two men. they demanded her car keys. when she said she didn't have a car, she was stabbed. a new report sales the government actually reduced the chances taxpayers will be repaid all the money used to bail out general motors. that's after the treasury department sold a block of the

we have learned that the accused gunman at the campus had strange outbursts. how long lug launched into a tire raid in a poetry class and talked about killing babies. the school suspended him in

september. but loughner's former girlfriend had a different take. >> i don't think he's mentally ill at all. i think he's making everything up. i think the outbursts, he's planned everything. i think he has been planning this for some time. >> school officials told loughner he could not returns in he underwent a mental health exam. loughner never returned. a judge from california has been appointed to the case of loughner. luge larry burns was appointed after all federal judges in arizona recused themselves because of impartiality. that's bus one of the victims was federal judge john roll, the chief federal judge for arizona. police in hayward are investigating a shooting that left a man with life-threatening injuries. police say he was shot in the

head by his 15-year-old son. when police arrived at the scene, the teenager had run away. police found him at a nearby park. they say he had a gun they belief was used in the shooting. neighbors say the by's mother and estranged father were arguing when the shots were fired. a san jose man charged with stabbing his wife is facing attempted murder charges. police had been searching for him for several days. yesterday they found the seriously injured man hiding beneath clothing inside his own home. he had cut his own throat in a suicide attempt. he is expected to live and eventually face charges. >> a family in concord said they do not believe former governor arnold schwarzenegger was

values, making loans more than the price the home can be sold. at least 5 million people are two months behind on their mortgage payments. last year 2.9 million people received some kind of foreclosure notice and that's up from 2009. real estate analysts said that number was artificially lowered after banks reviewed their policies because of the re bow signing -- robosigning scandal. the first quarter of this year is likely to show a rebound. nevada has the highest percentage of home repossession with one in 11 receiving them. california has the fourth highest percentage but the highest number of homes repossessed for the year. more than half of the

the government wants to hold the fries in school lunch programs. the guidelines are trying to reduce childhood obesity. they also want to cut sodium, increase fruits and vegetables and use only whole grains. we are getting the first nonpartisan review of governor jerry brown's budget proposal. it was called a good starting point that includes substantial spending reductions, lo the analyst also warned that brown's budget carries risky assumptions, especially shifting the responsibility from estate programs to the local level. a new agreement in san jose is helping some community

back in session and one of the high profile issues it will be taking up is gay marriage. democrats said they're optimistic about passing the law and governor martin o'malley said he will sign it. if that happens, maryland will become the sixth state to recognize the gay marriage. there's a new bill in the state assembly that would end a legal loophole, one that allows state employees to get away from paying tolls and red light tickets. it was originally meant to keep the home addresses of judges and other officials confidential. but some are not paying the fine because three don't get a ticket in the meal-- mail. the sis fer of minnesota vikings -- sister of minnesota

afghanistan and pakistan. he also met with iraqi government officials. a federal judge has rejected a request by a privacy organization for ac sass to body scanning information to determine effectiveness. the center sued for release of the images to exam min the technology, but the judge sided with government lawyers saying it could impact national security. it's not clear in the images show actual passenger or test subjects. a kentucky attorney selling special scanner blocking underwear is having a tough time catching up with demand. the garments use a special ink that blur body parts. ford is number one when it comes to owner loyalty.

>> topping our news. disurk graffiti has caused concern on the campus of uc santa cruz. >> reporter: we're at the foot of the campus entrance right now. the actual place where the emergency was discovered at college 10 is on the north side of campus, probably a mile from here. we spoke to the uc santa cruz vice chancellor. she said the emergency was specific enough for them to have concerns about putting out a campus wide alert, which was not put out until earlier this week. this happened on december 2nd. students are tending to make up their own story because they don't have specifics. on january 11 the school issued an alert because of graffiti

written on this wall. it was discovered in early december. high ranking officials said they didn't alert the people until early this week because they were quietly trying to solve the break and the winter break was around the corner. the message said a violent act would occur on january 18. even though no details have been released, students are spreading a different scenario. >> there's been rumors going around saying this guy will take out himself with three others. >> reporter: again, other students say they're definitely concerned about the message, especially in the wake of the tucson killing. i asked if the message coming out after the shooting in towson was the result -- tucson was as a result of that.
